The national capital on Friday, May 24, recorded a temperature of 41.7 degrees, higher than the season’s normal, and the mercury level is expected to hit a maximum of 44 degree Celsius today, May 25, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Red alert in West Bengal
While several regions in the country battle heat, a depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall along the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh around midnight on May 26. This will bring heavy rainfall to the coastal districts of West Bengal and northern Odisha.
To be named Remal, this is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season.
The cyclone could reach wind speeds of 120 kilometers per hour (km/h) on Sunday, May 26. The Met office has issued a warning for extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal and northern Odisha on May 26-27. Additionally, parts of northeast India may experience extremely heavy precipitation on May 27-28.
A red alert has also been issued for the coastal districts of South and North 24 Parganas in West Bengal on May 26 and 27.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government has instructed the authorities in four districts to take preparatory measures in anticipation of a severe cyclonic storm, officials said.
Heatwave across India
As per the IMD, heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha from May 25 to 28. Gujarat is expected to experience heat wave conditions during the same period. West Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra may face heat waves today, while East Uttar Pradesh could see them from May 26 to 28. West Madhya Pradesh is likely to experience heat waves on May 27 and 28.
Meanwhile, Most parts of Rajasthn are expected to face a heat wave to severe heat wave from May 25-28. Some or many parts of Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh are expected to face these conditions from May 25 to 28, and West Uttar Pradesh from May 26 to 28.
Which areas are to see rainfall?
Cyclonic circulations over south Kerala and northeast Madhya Pradesh will lead to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in regions including Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will experience widespread rainfall over the next week, with isolated heavy rainfall.
