Chennai Airport To Get Facial Recognition Tech DigiYatra From THIS Month

The DigiYatra system aims to decrease waiting times for passengers at airport entry points and during security screenings.

DigiYatra At Chennai Airport: Suresh Khadakbhavi, the Chief Executive Officer of DigiYatra Foundation, announced on Saturday that Chennai Airport is set to be one of the 14 airports across the country to implement the DigiYatra service in June, which is the following month.

The DigiYatra system, utilizing facial recognition technology, aims to decrease waiting times for passengers at airport entry points and during security screenings.

The launch of DigiYatra at Chennai Airport was scheduled for March 31, but it has been postponed due to pending approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

“DigiYatra has seen impressive adoption and expansion over the last year, with more than 20 million users experiencing the benefits of this seamless travel solution. Currently rolled out in 14 airports, DigiYatra is set to be introduced in 14 more airports next month,” said Khadakbhavi at the Future Aviation Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, recently, according to a release by the foundation.

“Our focus is now expanding to international travel, starting with prototype testing on e-passport-based enrollment, expected next month. There will be numerous deliberations that need to be done with various ministries and other stakeholders, which might take some time to conclude on the way forward,” he added.

Around 50% of passengers at the selected airports of India use DigiYatra and the adoption rate is around 30-40% at most big airports, said Khadakbhavi.

Digi Yatra is an industry-led digital initiative coordinated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It utilizes facial recognition to verify passenger identities at various checkpoints, such as check-in, security, and boarding gates, without physical documents.
