Weather update: Contrasting scenes! As Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar lie in grips of heatwave, THESE southern states are expected to witness heavy rainfall

The state of Kerala is likely to be hit by isolated extremely heavy rainfall on May 20 and 21, the weather agency said. 

Several areas in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana are likely to witness heat wave  to severe heat wave conditions from May 17 to 21, the IMD said. Besides this, heat wave conditions are also expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh from May 17 to 21, while isolated pockets of Gujarat could experience the same during the said period.

Bihar has also been put on the map of heat wave from May 17 to 20, Jharkhand on May 19 and 20.

The tentacles of the heatwave are also expected to extend to northern Madhya Pradesh from May 18 to 21, Gangetic West Bengal from May 18 to 20, and Odisha on May 20 and 21.

Hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over Konkan and Goa, Jharkhand, Assam, and Tripura on May 17 and 18; West Bengal on May 17; and Odisha on May 18 and 19. Additionally, warm night conditions are very likely to prevail over Uttar Pradesh on May 17 and 18.

While the northern regions will be crumbling under the pressure of the heatwave, the southern states are expected to witness heavy rainfall in the coming days, the IMD said.

Extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala

The state of Kerala is likely to be hit by isolated extremely heavy rainfall on May 20 and 21, the weather agency said. 

Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka from May 17 to 21. Lakshadweep is expected to experience this on May 20 and 21.

Similarly, isolated very heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from May 17 to 21. Kerala and Mahe are expected to see isolated very heavy rainfall from May 17 to 19. South Interior Karnataka will likely see isolated very heavy rainfall on May 20 and 21.

Rise in Maximum temperature

As per the IMD’s May 17 press release, a gradual rise of about 2°C in maximum temperatures is very likely over many parts of Northwest India during May 18 and 19, with no significant change expected afterward.

Similarly, a gradual rise of about 2-3°C in maximum temperatures is very likely over many parts of Central and East India during May 18, 19, 20 and 21, with no significant change expected thereafter.

Maharashtra is expected to see a rise of about 2-4°C in the temperature in the coming days.

No significant change in maximum temperatures is very likely over the rest of the country.
