India Weather Update: IMD predicts heatwave in northwest, rain and thunderstorms in THESE areas – Check forecast

India braces for a heatwave in the Northwest starting May 16, while South, East, and Central regions face thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, with the Southwest Monsoon advancing around May 19.

As May progresses, India is bracing for a shift in weather patterns, with various regions experiencing contrasting conditions. The latest weather forecast for the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a fresh spell of heatwave to grip Northwest India from May 16, bringing scorching temperatures to the region. 

Meanwhile, South Peninsular India is expected to witness a wet spell, with isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until May 17. Similarly, East and Central India are anticipated to experience a wet spell, also accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, until May 14. The Southwest Monsoon is forecasted to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 19.

Rains, gusty winds lash parts of Mumbai

Rains and gusty winds swept through parts of Mumbai and nearby metropolitan areas on Monday, disrupting Metro and local train services. IMD in Mumbai issued a “nowcast warning,” predicting thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to intense rainfall for Thane, Palghar, and Mumbai. An IMD official stated, “Thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rain, along with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, are very likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai over the next 3-4 hours.”

Brace for hotter days in Delhi

Delhi is set to experience rising temperatures, with the maximum expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius later this week, according to IMD. On Monday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. The IMD forecast indicates that the maximum temperature in Delhi will climb to around 43 degrees Celsius by Thursday, and further increase to 44 degrees Celsius by Friday and Saturday. Additionally, strong winds ranging from 25 to 35 kmph are anticipated between May 15 and 19. Nights are also expected to become warmer during this period.

Unseasonal rains hit parts of Gujarat 

Unseasonal showers affected parts of Gujarat on Monday, with strong winds and a duststorm disrupting commuters in Ahmedabad as they returned home from work. The meteorological department has forecast light rains with thunderstorms in several districts over the next three days. Ahmedabad experienced a sudden change in weather on Monday evening, as strong winds and a duststorm, accompanied by light rain, reduced visibility in the city.

IMD forecasts rainfall with gusty winds in parts of MP

IMD forecasted rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and a chance of hail in isolated areas of the Malwa-Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh. The forecast indicates that from 8:30 am on Tuesday, rainfall with gusty winds and possible hail is likely in Khargone, Khandwa, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Ratlam, Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Mandsaur, and Neemuch.
