Udyam Registration: Want to cancel your MSME license online? Here’s the updated process

Udyam portal was introduced by the government in July 2020 to replace the UAM registration system and ease the online process for businesses to register as MSMEs.

Even as Udyam registration under the MSME Ministry comes with a host of benefits for a small business, there could be reasons why an entrepreneur may want to give up the certification, for instance, if the business is shutting down or the owner of the company has changed, and more. As easy as it is to register for Udyam certification online, it is equally smooth to withdraw your certification in probably less than 10 minutes on the official website by the MSME Ministry with your login credentials in place.

Here’s the quick online process, updated from last year, for cancelling the registration online: 

  • Visit udyamregistration.gov.in and click on ‘Udyami Login’ under ‘Login’ 
  • Login to the portal with your Udyam registration number, mobile number 
  • Click on ‘Cancellation’ on the top right of the screen (before the ‘Logout’ option) 
  • Under the ‘Type of Cancellation’ drop-down menu, select your reason for cancelling the registration. The options would include ‘No Further Need’, ‘I have Shut Down my Business’, ‘This is my Duplicate UAM’, ‘Company Owner Changed’, and ‘Other’ 
  • Under ‘Reason for Cancellation’; explain your reason for withdrawing the registration 
  • Click on ‘Cancel My Udyam’ 
  • ‘Udyam Cancellation Submitted Successfully. You will get the Udyam Cancellation message on the screen
  • An email with confirmation of cancellation will be sent to you in around 10 days

Udyam portal was introduced by the government in July 2020 to replace the UAM registration system and ease the online process for businesses to register as MSMEs. 

According to the data shared in the Lok Sabha last year by the minister of state in the MSME Ministry Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma in a written reply to a question, 32,298 MSMEs have cancelled their Udyam registration due to the shutdown of their businesses since the launch of the Udyam registration portal till December 8, 2023.

As per the consolidated data (from the Udyam registration portal and the erstwhile Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum) shared earlier by the government on the number of MSMEs shut between 2016 and 2022 was 10,067, FE Aspire had reported earlier.
