The weather department recorded a temperature increase of four to six degrees Celsius above normal in northern, southern, and eastern states over the past week
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for multiple states as temperatures soar in East India.
Dr. Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at IMD, stated that a heatwave is currently affecting East India, and it’s anticipated to persist in some states for the next 4-5 days. He added that a red alert for heatwave to severe heatwave has been issued for West Bengal.
“The temperature is 6.5 to 4 degrees higher than normal. Along with this, the minimum temperature is also higher than normal. From tomorrow, we predict that there will be a slight drop in the temperature, and after that Orange alert has been given for 4 days” he told news agency ANI.

YELLOW ALERT FOR MUMBAI, THANE AND RAIGAD
In Mumbai, a yellow alert has been issued, along with its neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad, indicating the likelihood of hot and humid conditions until Thursday.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, said, “The citizens will be experiencing hot, humid conditions and uncomfortable weather conditions, even though the temperature will remain in the range of 34 – 35 degree Celsius, owing to the high levels of humidity. We are witnessing such discomfort because of the blowing westerlies which bring in a lot of moisture. The presence of this moisture thereby leads to an increase in the humidity levels.”

POSSIBILITY OF LIGHT RAIN IN DELHI
Kumar mentioned that according to the weather department’s forecast for Delhi, the temperature is expected to hover around 38 degrees Celsius in the next 2-3 days. Following this, it may gradually rise by 1-2 degrees, with a possibility of light rain on Monday.
“At present, if you talk about Eastern India, the temperature has reached 44 degrees Celcius in 1-2 stations. In the next 4-5 days, the temperature can reach 44 degrees Celcius in Eastern India, and in Northwest India, there is no hope of it being near 40 or more than 41 degrees Celcius,” the IMD scientist said.
For Odisha, the IMD has issued an Orange alert. Following this, the weather department estimates a slight drop in temperature. However, after a break of 2 days, heatwave conditions are expected to return in Odisha.
In Bihar, heatwave conditions are anticipated to persist for the next five days. Alerts have been issued for this duration, as both night and morning temperatures are higher than usual.
Similarly, in Jharkhand, there’s a likelihood of heatwave conditions. In South Peninsular India, although there’s no heatwave scenario, the IMD has issued a warning for ‘Hot and Humid’ conditions, with maximum temperatures above normal.
“For Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, we have issued a ‘Hot and Humid’ warning alert for the next 4-5 days,” Kumar said.
