Weather Update: Intense heatwave grips parts of India; IMD predicts more rainfall in Goa, Himachal Pradesh – Check complete forecast here 

Northeast India is anticipated to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds till April 24.

A significant weather pattern is set to impact various parts of India over the coming days, as per the latest forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha are expected to experience a continuation of the ongoing heat wave to severe heat wave conditions today, gradually easing thereafter. 

Meanwhile, Northeast India is anticipated to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds till April 24. Similarly, Central and South Peninsular India are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty winds on April 21-22.

Intense heatwave grips parts of India

Parts of India experienced a scorching heatwave on Saturday, with maximum temperatures ranging from 40 to 46 degrees Celsius in many areas. According to IMD, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were observed in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal during the day.

This ongoing heatwave, affecting parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal, marks the second heatwave spell this month. The first spell affected parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. On Saturday, maximum temperatures in some places were recorded seven to eight degrees above normal.

4-8 heatwave days expected in April, 10-20 till June 

The Meteorological office reported that in April, four to eight heatwave days are expected in various parts of the country, compared to the normal range of one to three days. For the entire April-June period, ten to twenty heatwave days are anticipated, against the normal of four to eight days.

Areas expected to experience more heatwave days include Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Some places may even record over 20 days of heatwave.

Delhi weather update 

IMD forecasts strong surface winds for the national capital today. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to reach around 38 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.

On Saturday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of year, according to the India Meteorological Department. The minimum temperature settled at 23.3 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average. Humidity levels ranged between 34 percent and 60 percent, it added.

Unseasonal rains in Goa

Unseasonal rains in Goa on Saturday brought respite from the searing summer heat. According to the forecast by IMD, lightning and winds gusting at 40-50 kilometres per hour are very likely in many places in the coastal state today and tomorrow. 

The MeT Office has also predicted “heavy to very heavy rainfall” at isolated places on these days. IMD said there will be light rains at isolated places till April 22, after which weather is likely to be dry till April 26.

Thunderstorms and rain expected in Himachal Pradesh

The meteorological station in Himachal Pradesh has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms at isolated places on April 22 and 23. It predicts rain in mid hills and rain as well as snowfall in higher reaches for the next six days, from April 21 to April 26, due to a fresh western disturbance expected to affect northwest India starting April 22. Shimla and its surrounding areas experienced intermittent rain accompanied by lightning, with the sky remaining heavily overcast.
