Weather Update: IMD predicts sweltering heat in parts of Odisha, Telangana, West Bengal and THESE states – Check full forecast here

IMD predicts heatwave conditions in parts of Odisha, Telangana, Gangetic West Bengal, Konkan, Kutch, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam this week.

As the scorching heat tightens its grip over East India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a prolonged spell of heat waves until April 23. Parts of South Peninsular India are also bracing for the sweltering conditions, with heat wave warnings in effect. Meanwhile, Northeast India faces a contrasting forecast, with thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall expected at isolated places till April 22. 

According to IMD, in Northwest India a similar pattern emerges, with a rainfall spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds forecasted for today, followed by a fresh spell on April 22-23.

IMD heatwave warning 

The weather department highlighted that the heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over parts of Odisha, Telangana, Gangetic West Bengal, Konkan, Kutch, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam this week.

The weather agency further stated that hot and humid conditions are expected to persist over Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Rayalaseema from April 23-27. Similarly, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra can anticipate such conditions from April 23-24, while coastal areas of Gujarat should prepare for them from April 23-25. Finally, Konkan and Goa are likely to experience hot and humid weather from April 25-27.

Record heat in Delhi

Delhi on Friday experienced a maximum temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees above the seasonal average, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks the highest recorded maximum temperature in the national capital so far this summer. The IMD has predicted a partly cloudy sky with strong surface winds for Saturday, with temperatures expected to range around 39 degrees Celsius for the maximum and 21 degrees Celsius for the minimum.

Mercury surges in Odisha 

The Met Office also announced that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Odisha until April 21. At least ten other stations recorded maximum temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius or higher, with notable figures from Jharsuguda (43.8°C), Angul (43.7°C), Titlagarh (43.5°C), Bolangir, Bhawanipatna, Malkangiri, and Nayagarh all hitting 43°C. Additionally, a total of 32 places saw maximum temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius or above.

“The maximum temperature is very likely to be 40 degrees Celsius or above at most places and above normal by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in some districts over the next two days,” the IMD said in a bulletin. The meteorological department also indicated that the state could experience some respite from the heatwave as thunderstorms are forecasted from Saturday onwards.

IMD predicts heat wave in parts of Telangana

IMD yesterday issued a weather bulletin forecasting heatwave conditions in isolated areas across 20 districts in Telangana. Additionally, thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging from 30-40 kmph, are predicted in certain regions on Saturday.
