Islamabad: At least 87 people have been killed and 82 others injured in separate rain-triggered incidents in Pakistan over the past week as heavy downpours continued to wreak havoc in parts of the country, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said. The NDMA reported that 2,715 houses have been either partially or fully damaged across the country. The majority of the casualties were a result of structural collapses, lightning strikes, and flash floods. The northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province witnessed the highest number of fatalities, with 36 people losing their lives and 53 others being injured. Following closely is the eastern Punjab province, which reported 25 deaths and eight injuries.
Regional Impact
The southwestern Balochistan province recorded a total of 15 fatalities and 10 injuries, while in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, 11 people lost their lives and 11 others were injured due to the heavy rains. The devastation has been widespread, affecting various regions of the country.
Government Response
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the rains. He urged the concerned departments to expedite relief efforts in the affected areas and work towards reopening closed roads due to landslides and heavy rainfall.

Pakistan Met Department imposes rain emergency in Karachi
The Pakistan Meteorological Department imposed a rain emergency in Karachi on Thursday as a downpour continued in several regions, reported The News International.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz said that various areas across Balochistan have been receiving rain. Sarfraz said the rain system from Balochistan was entering Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to which both the provinces are likely to witness heavy rains.
