Air India suspends flights to and from Tel Aviv amid heightened tensions in West Asia

Tata Group airline Air India has announced suspension of all flights to and from Tel Aviv till April end amid heightened tensions in West Asia between Israel and Iran. “Our flights to and from Tel Aviv will remain suspended until 30th April 2024, in view of the emerging situation in the Middle East. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are extending support to our passengers who have confirmed bookings for travel to and from Tel Aviv during this period, with a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges,” the airline said in a post on X.

“We would like to reiterate that at Air India, the safety of our customers and crew remains top priority,” it added.

In the early hours of Friday, explosions echoed over an Iranian city in what some media reports described as an Israeli attack. Iran, however, has played down the incident, indicating it had no plans for a retaliation. Local Iranian media have described a small number of explosions resulting from an interception by Tehran’s air defences over the city of Isfahan.

Israel has maintained a muted response over the incident.

The escalation comes in the aftermath of Tehran launching over 300 drones and missiles towards Israeli territory in a retaliatory attack on April 14. These strikes were a response to an Israeli attack on an Iranian consulate building in Damascus on April 1, which resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people
