There is now greater flexibility when booking train tickets using the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) app and website of Indian Railways. Through UTS, travelers can buy tickets for non-suburban travel (more than 200 km) up to three days in advance (not including the travel day). “In case of suburban tickets up to 200 km, they will be issued only the day of the journey,” said South Eastern Railways on its website as of April 12, 2024.

Here’s how to buy rail tickets using the UTS app.
Step 1: Install the UTS app and register. When it’s ready, you can open the app and log in.
‘QR Booking’, ‘Quick Booking’, ‘Platform Ticket’, and other options are available on the app’s home screen. A distinct tab labeled ‘Normal Booking’ would exist. There will be two options under this tab: “Book & Travel (Paperless)” and “Book & Print (Paper).” The paperless option, as its name implies, entails making your entire ticket purchase online. When you purchase a paper ticket, you pay online and pick up your actual ticket from a special UTS kiosk or booking desk at the railway station.

Step 2: Turn on the GPS on your mobile device in order to purchase a “paperless” ticket.
GPS is not needed for tickets printed in paper mode. Whatever method of reservation you choose, there are identical steps to follow. Choose the names of the “Depart From” and “Go To” stations. Next, select ‘Get Fare’ to be taken to the payment page. You may view the precise time of the next train to the chosen location by selecting the ‘Next Trains’ option.

Step 3: Buying the ticket is the final step. The R Wallet and online payments with a debit card, credit card, UPI, or Internet banking are the two main choices.
Click “Book Ticket” after choosing the “Payment Type” and “Class” of the ticket you want to purchase. Following a successful payment, you will be taken to the payment page, where your ticket will be booked (paperless). To print the ticket you bought via the UTS app, visit the closest UTS kiosk or railway booking counter if you choose the “paper” option when ordering your tickets.
