As per the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative, one FASTag can’t be used for multiple vehicles
The FASTag facility has made it seamless to pay toll tax at toll plazas without stopping the traffic. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to automatically deduct the toll via the FASTag sticker put on the windscreen of four-wheeler vehicles as they cross the toll booth.
People without a FASTag are penalised by paying double tax by the plazas across national highways from February 16, 2021. One can recharge their FASTags at kiosks located outside all toll plazas on the highways. Now, more and more people are recharging via online banking or through e-wallets on services like Paytm.
Here is how you can do FASTag Recharge on Paytm:
Step 1: Log in to your Paytm account.
Step 2: Select the ‘Recharge & Bill Payments’ option.
Step 3: Scroll down to the ‘Transit’ section and select the ‘FASTag Recharge’ option.
Step 4: Select the FASTag issuer bank from the list of options.
Step 5: Give your Vehicle Number and click on ‘Proceed’.
Step 6: Enter the recharge amount and click ‘Proceed’.

On March 26, Paytm announced that it is enabling FASTag recharges directly through its app. When the FASTag is linked to the Paytm wallet, then the user simply has to maintain the balance in their Paytm wallet as opposed to especially recharging the FASTag. This makes interstate traveling easier and spares one the hassle of keeping track of their FASTag balance.
Paytm users have the option of purchasing new FASTags from HDFC Bank through the app. Here is how to purchase HDFC FASTag on Paytm:
Step 1: Open Paytm and search for ‘Buy HDFC FASTag’ and tap on it
Step 2: Fill up the customer and vehicle details
Step 3: Make payment and get the HDFC FASTag delivered to your home address
On Wednesday, the NHAI advised Paytm FASTag users to get a new FASTag from another bank before March 15. This advisory came after the Reserve Bank of India’s restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank, as per which the Paytm FASTag users will not be able to recharge or top-up their balance after March 15. However, they can still use the existing balance to pay tolls beyond the stipulated date.

Earlier this year, the NHAI launched the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative, which means that no one cannot use a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or link multiple FASTags to one vehicle. The initiative also makes it mandatory to verify the FASTag via KYC.
