Weather Update: IMD predicts heavy rainfall and snowfall in northern regions, hailstorms in Punjab and Haryana – Check complete forecast here

According to the Met Office, thundershowers are likely in the national capital on Saturday.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (March 29) forecasted light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity in parts of Northwest India till March 31, while Western Himalayan Region is likely to witness isolated heavy falls today. Additionally, a fresh spell of intense rainfall and thunderstorms is forecasted over Northeast India from March 30 to April 1. 

Widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall, along with isolated thunderstorms and lightning, are expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand today and tomorrow. Furthermore, isolated hailstorms are forecasted over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh today, with Uttarakhand likely experiencing them from March 29-31.

Isolated heavy rainfall and snowfall are highly probable over Arunachal Pradesh, along with isolated heavy rainfall expected over Assam and Meghalaya from March 30 to April 1. There’s a possibility of isolated very heavy falls specifically on March 31. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on April 1.

Delhi records warmest day of year on Friday 

Officials reported that on Friday, the national capital experienced the warmest day of the year thus far, with the maximum temperature reaching 37.8 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees above the seasonal average. “Despite increasing temperatures, the presence of cloudy skies and light showers in Delhi prevented the heat from being felt,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre. According to the Met Office, thundershowers are likely in the city on Saturday.

Hot, humid weather in Odisha 

The Meteorological Department has forecast hot and humid weather conditions in Odisha for the next four to five days, with temperatures expected to rise to 40 degrees Celsius. According to a statement from the Met department, the prevailing dry weather in significant parts of the state, coupled with intense solar radiation, is anticipated to elevate maximum temperatures by two degrees Celsius in interior Odisha over the next two days. Subsequently, there is no significant change expected thereafter.

“Consequently, the maximum temperature is likely to remain between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius at many places in interior Odisha and between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius in coastal Odisha over the next four to five days,” it said.

IMD predicts heat wave conditions in April, May

The Meteorological Department has forecasted above-normal temperatures and anticipated heat wave conditions during the months of April and May. According to Dr. Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at the IMD, heavy rainfall is predicted today in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, the IMD has mentioned the likelihood of very light rainfall in Delhi in the coming days.

“We are expecting above-normal temperatures as we are approaching April. In April, we will experience heat wave conditions over the central part of the country,” he said.

“May is the warmest month of the seasons and the country may experience heat waves over northwest and central India,” he further said while adding that “as per our long-term predictions, there will be abnormal temperatures and heat wave conditions may prevail over the central part of the country for the next two-three months.”
