Google’s Pixel series consistently ranks amongst the best Android phones, and the Pixel 8 series, crowned the best of 2023 at MWC 2024, is no exception. With top-of-the-range features like a 120Hz display, a 50MP camera, and extended software support, Google delivered the best Android experience yet for its smartphone users. However, anticipation for Google’s next move is high, and all eyes are now on what the company has in store for the next-generation Pixel phone, particularly the Pixel 9 Pro.
While the launch is still some way off, expected sometime in late September or early October like last year, leaks and rumours are already swirling around the internet, offering a glimpse at potential advancements in design, performance, and camera technology for the Pixel 9 Pro. Here’s a quick look at everything we know so far about the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro.
Pixel 9 Pro design revamp: Flat edges and a compact camera module
Leaked renders suggest that the Pixel 9 Pro will embrace the flat-edge trend, similar to recent iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones. This design choice echoes the Pixel Fold while maintaining the signature camera bar. While leaked dimensions hint at a smaller display for the Pro model, industry insider Ross Young indicates that all Pixel 9 phones will boast larger screens than their predecessors.
Additionally, recent leaks showcase renders and a video detailing the possible design of the Pixel 9 Pro. Sporting a flat display with a punch-hole camera, the device exudes a compact yet sleek aesthetic reminiscent of recent flagship offerings.
Another interesting design element is the rumoured “Adaptive Touch” technology. Google is said to be adding a new adaptive touch function to Pixel phones, similar to the aqua touch we saw in the OnePlus 12 series but with more features. For the Pixel 9 Pro, this “Adaptive Touch” feature would automatically adjust screen sensitivity based on the user’s environment and activity, potentially enhancing the overall user experience.
Tensor G4 and potential for faster charging
The Pixel 9 is expected to be powered by Google’s in-house Tensor G4 chip, an upgrade from the current G3. While initial rumours hinted at a completely new custom chip, recent reports suggest that such plans are deferred to the Pixel 10 in 2025. The Pixel 9 might also be among the first phones to support the upcoming Qi2 wireless charging standard, offering faster and more convenient charging capabilities.
Android 15 and AI-powered assistant
As always, Google is expected to unveil its latest Android iteration alongside the Pixel 9 series. This year, it’s rumoured to be Android 15, and the Pixel 9 will likely be the first phone to launch with it. Specific features remain under wraps, but Google is known for pushing the boundaries of mobile software.
Whispers also suggest a new “Pixie” assistant powered by Google’s Gemini AI chip. This assistant might operate offline on the device itself, potentially offering functionalities beyond the current Google Assistant. However, RAM limitations might restrict this feature to Pixel 9 models with more than 8GB of RAM.

Telephoto lens and AI enhancements in camera
Pixel phones are renowned for their exceptional cameras, and Google is expected to take mobile photography a step further with the Pixel 9 series. Leaks suggest the most significant camera upgrade could be the inclusion of a telephoto lens on the standard Pixel 9, potentially matching the Pro model for the first time. Google is likely to continue its trend of prioritising AI-powered software processing to elevate camera performance.
Pixel 9 Pro India launch date and expected price
Traditionally, Google launches its Pixel phones in the first week of October. This year too, we can expect the official unveiling around early October, followed by store availability a week later. As for the price, following the Pixel 8 series’ increase, expect the Pixel 9 to start at around $700 and the Pro version at $1,000. However, it’s important to remember that this information is based on leaks and rumours. We’ll have to wait for the official launch to see the full picture. As for the Pixel 8 series, the standard Google Pixel 8 has a starting price of Rs 75,999 in India, while the Pro model, the Google Pixel 8 Pro, has a starting price of Rs 106,998 in India.
