Iyer had also complained of back spasm during the second Test between India and England in Vizag and didn’t make the cut in the squad for the remaining three games of the series. However, there was no official reason behind his exclusion and Iyer also skipped the Ranji Trophy quarter-final between Mumbai and Baroda.
Iyer though returned for Mumbai’s semi-final clash with Tamil Nadu and then in the title clash against Vidarbha, scored 95 off 111 in the second innings on Day 3. During the course of his knock though, he was twice treated for back spasms by the team physio.
According to a report in the Times of India, Iyer has aggravated his back injury for which he underwent surgery last year and he may end up missing the first few matches for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024.
“It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury which has got aggravated. It’s unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source was quoted as saying by TOI.
“During the recently-held Test series against England at home, he had told the Indian team management about this injury troubling him again,” the source added.

Iyer, who leads KKR in IPL, missed the entire last season because he underwent surgery on his back. After spending months on the sideline, he made his competitive return with the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka before playing an intrinsic role in India’s unbeaten run to the ODI World Cup final in October-November.
Last month, Iyer, along with Ishan Kishan missed out on annual BCCI contract with the board saying the duo wasn’t considered “in this round of recommendations.”
