In today’s digital age, where access to information is at our fingertips, it’s crucial to be mindful of the potential risks associated with sharing sensitive details online. A recent incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida shed light on the dangers of cyber fraud when a resident fell victim to an Aadhaar card-related scam.
The incident involved Munmun Bhattacharya, a resident of Mahagun Moderne Society in Sector-78, who sought Google’s assistance to update her address on her Aadhaar card. Following a helpline number suggested by Google, Munmun contacted it for assistance. Unfortunately, this led to her unwittingly sharing crucial personal details with a cyber fraudster.
The fraudster, posing as an Aadhaar card agent, obtained the victim’s Aadhaar card details over the phone call. Subsequently, a sum of Rs 50,000 was fraudulently withdrawn from Munmun’s linked bank account. Upon discovering the unauthorised transactions, Munmun promptly filed a case against the unknown perpetrator at the nearest Sector-113 police station.
Inspector Sarvesh Kumar Singh, in charge of Noida police station Sector-113, confirmed that the fraudulent activity occurred when the victim contacted the helpline number provided by Google. The fraudster, under the guise of assisting with the Aadhaar card update, duped the victim into downloading a mobile application, which facilitated the unauthorised withdrawals.
While the fraudster succeeded in one transaction, subsequent attempts were thwarted. Law enforcement authorities are actively investigating the case, with assistance from cyber cells, to apprehend the culprit and bring them to justice.
