Windows 11 gets new Sticky Notes app, but its only accessible from OneNote

The last update to the Sticky Notes app in 2020.

Microsoft recently unveiled the updated Sticky Notes app for Windows, which has been more or less the same for the last four years. However, unlike the original standalone app which has been around since Windows Vista, the new Sticky Notes experience is limited to Microsoft OneNote users.

According to a blog post by OneNote product manager Chetna Das, the new Sticky Notes app will be available from the Start Menu as well without users having the option to switch from the existing bare-bones app.

To launch the new Sticky Notes app, Microsoft says you will need to open the OneNote app on Windows and then click on the ‘Sticky Notes’ button, which appears on the top right of the screen. After you open it once, it can be quickly accessed by using the ‘Win + Alt + S’ combination. Users also have the option to pin it to the taskbar.

Here’s what the new Sticky Notes app looks like.

If you sign in using your Microsoft account, the Sticky Notes app will also sync all your notes across all your devices where you are signed in. This means you will be able to see all your desktop notes on the go using the OneNote app for Android and iOS.

Apart from being able to paste URLs and text, the updated Sticky Notes experience also allows users to take a screenshot of any app and save it as a note, with the newly created note automatically including the source information. Microsoft says this will allow users to quickly head over to the website where they captured the image.

The updated app also enables users to view the note in a large window by either double-pressing it or tapping on the pop-out icon in the top right corner. Users will also be able to use the app in a side-by-side mode.

The new Sticky Notes app is currently available to Current Channel (Preview) users who have installed OneNote on Windows version 2402 (Build 17328.20000) or later. meaning it is only accessible if you are an Insider.
