Petrol, and Diesel Prices on January 17: There is a slight fluctuation in the prices of crude oil in the international market. At around 6 am on Wednesday morning, WTI crude fell and was being sold at $ 71.91 per barrel. At the same time, Brent crude is trading slightly higher at 78.29 per barrel. Oil marketing companies in the country have released the latest rates of petrol and diesel. In India, fuel prices are revised every morning at 6 am. Before June 2017, price revision was done every 15 days.

In Chhattisgarh, the price of petrol has fallen by 60 paise and that of diesel by 59 paise. Petrol has become cheaper by 39 paise and diesel by 38 paise in Maharashtra. Apart from this, there is a decline in the prices of petrol and diesel in Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Odisha and Goa also. On the other hand, petrol and diesel have become costlier by 20 paise in Uttar Pradesh. Petrol has become costlier by 44 paise and diesel by 41 paise in West Bengal. Apart from this, the prices of petrol and diesel are also increasing in Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat.
At present, petrol in Delhi is being sold at Rs 96.72 a litre while diesel is being sold at Rs 89.62 a litre. Whereas in Mumbai, petrol is available at Rs 106.31 and diesel at Rs 94.27 per litre. While petrol in Kolkata is Rs 106.03 and diesel is Rs 92.76 per litre. On the other hand, petrol is being sold at Rs 102.63 and diesel at Rs 94.24 per litre in Chennai.

In India, oil marketing companies (OMCs) such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum determine petrol and diesel prices. This is done daily, and rates are determined following the price of crude oil throughout the world.
Why do fuel prices vary across states?
The rates for each day, whether new or unchanged, are announced at 6 am on the day. These, however, vary from state to state; this is due to criteria such as Value Added Tax (VAT), freight charges, local taxes, etc.
