We are living in the era of digital payments at present. India was already going the cashless way since the 2016 demonetisation. Then the pandemic and the resulting social distancing caused a massive surge in digital payments. UPI payments became hugely popular. Today, big showrooms to vegetable vendors – everyone accepts payments through UPI. The traffic police has also embraced digital payments. Many cities across the nation provide online traffic challan payment options. Speaking of the NCR, Gurugram Police has just begun to accept online challan payments. This service has already been launched by Faridabad Police. You can use any UPI app or PayTm to make the challan payment.
If you have violated any traffic regulations, you can be issued an e-Challan. An e-Challan is sent by SMS to your registered mobile number or your home address. Failure to pay within 60 days from the issue of the e-Challan can result in legal action being taken against you.

How to pay traffic challan from PayTm:
- Open the PayTm mobile app.
- Go to Recharge and Bill Payment.
- Click on ‘View All’ in the Recharge and Bill Payment section.
- Now find the ‘Challan’ section in it and click on it.
- Now select the ‘Traffic Authority’ from the drop down menu.
- Suppose your challan has been issued in Faridabad, then select Faridabad Police.
- Enter challan details. In this, challan number, vehicle number have to be filled. Click on and select ‘Proceed’.
- Now the challan details and amount will appear in front of you. Click on ‘Next’.
- Then cashback offers will also be visible. If any, select it and click on ‘Pay’.
- Now, choose your favourite Paytm method and make the payment.
- Now complete the process by clicking on ‘Pay Traffic Challan’
You can also complete the challan online by visiting the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ website (MoRTH). You must do this by going to the ministry’s official website, www.echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Here, you must first enter the challan number, the car registration number, or the driver’s licence number to check the challan data. Following that, you must click on Get Details and fill out the captcha. You will see the challan’s details displayed. Once you’ve seen the information, you can pay by choosing the ‘Pay online’ option on the same page.

Just because you can now pay the traffic penalty through UPI and online methods, does not mean the traditional mode of payment is obsolete. If you are not tech savvy, you can still use the traditional method. You must visit the traffic police station whose jurisdiction issued the ticket for your car in order to do this. There, you must pay the challan amount and meet with the relevant officer. Pay the challan and obtain its receipt at all times.
