Addressing this challenge, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) implemented a solution: the introduction of a short USSD code. This innovative feature enables digital payments to be conducted seamlessly, circumventing the need for internet connectivity.
What exactly does the USSD code entail?
NPCI introduced the *99# short USSD code, offering a mobile banking platform that operates independently of internet connectivity. This feature enables users to conduct various banking transactions, proving particularly beneficial in areas with limited network access.
Setting up your phone to enable offline UPI payments
Access your phone’s dialer and enter *99#. This unique code grants you access to conduct offline UPI transactions and execute associated tasks.
Upon dialing, a prompt will appear for language selection. Choose from the available 13 language options the one that best suits your comfort and preference.
After selecting your preferred language, proceed by entering the four characters representing your bank’s IFSC code into the designated text field.

If you’re using a smartphone, the system will display options for all accounts linked to your phone number. Enter the corresponding number (“1” or “2”) to select and link the preferred bank account, thereby establishing the offline payment process.
To finalize the setup, you will be prompted to input the last six digits and the expiry date of your debit card.
Upon entering all accurate details, your offline UPI payment feature will be successfully activated.
Making offline UPI payments step-by-step
To execute UPI payments via *99#, adhere to these procedural steps:
Dial *99# from the mobile number registered and linked to your bank account.
Choose your desired language from the interactive menu options provided.
Select the option for ‘Send Money’ or ‘Transfer Money’.
Input the beneficiary’s mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA) as directed.
Indicate the specific amount you intend to transfer.
Input your UPI PIN to authenticate the transaction.
