Woman shares about attempted ‘scam’ by IRCTC caterer on Patna-Delhi train, viral post describes ordeal.
Ordering food during a lengthy train journey is a common practice, but the potential for encountering scams during the process can cast a shadow over travellers’ experiences. Such a scenario unfolded for a woman travelling with her family from Patna to Delhi via the Brahmaputra Mail train. Opting for a veg thali, the family was informed by the IRCTC catering staff that the cost would be Rs. 150 per person. However, when they requested the bill, the staff initially provided excuses, eventually revealing an attempt at overpricing.

Sharing her experience on the micro-blogging site ‘X,’ user @ruchikokcha recounted, “The IRCTC dinner person told us the price of veg thali to be ₹150. We clearly told him we will need the bill. When he brought the bill he bifurcated the amount into two components veg thali- ₹80 + paneer sabji ₹70 =₹150..” Despite having ordered only the veg thali, the family’s inquiries were met with resistance. “He kept arguing with us for an hour that this is how the bill is prepared. After an hour his official came and said he can’t give the promised bill. They gave us bill for veg thali ₹80 and said “aap itna hi pay kar do” (You just pay this much).”
The poster then exposed the attempted scam by the IRCTC caterer online, stating, “Clearly the staff is looting the public by giving the meal overpriced and then adding other components to the bill.”

The post quickly gained traction, prompting reactions from the public. One user lamented, “Unofficially charging passengers is one thing, the food quality itself needs improvement. You just eat for the sake of eating.”
Another expressed, “Many such instances of daylight robbery by IRCTC goes unnoticed. Good you highlighted this. This will send a strong message,” while a third added, “While most of the passengers don’t ask for bills from @IRCTCofficial , the extra money collection by their Staffs have become their birth right. So many times they even refuse to give food, if you ask for the bill. Sad affairs.”
