The Uttar Pradesh government released Rs 1,580 crore to various development authorities and Housing Development Council for land acquisition under the UP government’s plan to build new townships in the city. The Chief Minister Urban Expansion scheme aims to provide residential facilities to the urban population and promote well-planned and systematic development of urban areas.

Additional Chief Secretary of Housing and Urban Planning Department, Nitin Ramesh Gokarn issued an order stating that the UP Housing Development Council and Varanasi Development Authority received the maximum amount of Rs 400 crore each, followed by Meerut, Moradabad and Kanpur Development Authority with Rs 200 crore each under the scheme.

Out of the Rs 200 crore sanctioned to Kanpur Development Authority, Rs 150 crore was allocated for New Kanpur City Scheme and Rs 50 crore for Bingawan Housing Scheme. Meanwhile, Agra Development Authority got Rs 150 crore and Ayodhya Development Authority got Rs 30 crore to develop new townships in the cities.

The Chief Minister Urban Expansion, which was implemented last year, provides up to 50 per cent of the cost of land acquisition as seed capital by the state government for a maximum period of 20 years.
