The name of the ‘Bombay High Court’ could be changed to ‘Mumbai High Court.’
Mumbai: Will the name of the ‘Bombay High Court’ be changed to ‘Mumbai High Court’? Is there a plan to change the names of some high courts in the country? Responding on these questions, the Ministry of Law stated that the governments of Maharashtra and Goa, along with the Bombay High Court, agree to the proposal to change the names of all three Bombay High Courts to ‘Mumbai High Court.’ However, according to the ministry, the proposal to change the name of the Madras High Court to ‘Tamil Nadu High Court’ did not receive the High Court’s approval.

The Ministry of Law has informed the Parliament that the Calcutta High Court and the West Bengal government have not agreed to the proposal to change the name of the Calcutta High Court. However, the ministry clarified that there is no proposal to bring legislation on this matter.
It is worth noting that before this, the Supreme Court had dismissed a public interest petition demanding the renaming of the Bombay High Court to the Maharashtra High Court. The bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Vikram Nath had rejected the petition filed by former judicial officer V.P. Patil.
The Bombay High Court is one of the four Chartered High Courts established in British India during the reign of the Queen of England through Letters Patent. It still bears the same name by which it was originally established.
In a petition filed through advocate Shivaji M. Jadhav, it was argued that the cultural responsibility of Maharashtrians is at risk without changing such names. In this regard, the right to live with dignity was invoked, as the petitioner argued that adding ‘Maharashtra’ to the name would be beneficial for the dignity of its residents.

The petitioner also stated that steps should be taken to preserve the culture, heritage, and traditions of Maharashtrians, and similar directives should be issued for other High Courts that do not bear the names of their respective principal states.
