Chennai Metro Rail Limited celebrates foundation day with a special ₹5 flat fare on single journey E-QR tickets, promoting digital payments.
To mark the foundation day of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the Chennai Metro offered the passengers a flat rate of Rs 5 on December 3.
The government of Tamil Nadu founded “Chennai Metro Rail Limited” on December 3, 2007. Originally intended for a single day, the special fare offer has now been extended to include December 17.

Currently, the minimum fare for the Chennai Metro is Rs 10 for travel up to 2 km. In an X post on Saturday, the Chennai Metro announced the special offer and wrote, “Chennai Metro Rail Limited Offers Special ₹5 Fare for passengers purchasing single journey E-QR tickets like Static QR, Paytm, WhatsApp, or PhonePe only as part of Foundation Day Celebrations on 03-12-2023 and 17-12-2023.” The offer also aimed to promote digital payment amongst commuters.
The News Minute reported that this offer is “not applicable on the Store Value passes issued on the CMRL app or on paper tickets.”
Initially, the offer was only applicable for December 3 but it was later extended. In a press release published on Saturday, the CMRL announced, “Chennai Metro Rail Foundation Day Offer extended to December 17, 2023 in connection with the heavy rainfall prediction from the Regional Metrological Centre, Chennai. To ensure more passengers benefit from the Chennai. Metro Rail Foundation Day offer of Rs. 5, the offer will be available on December 3, 2023 and on December 17, 2023 (Sunday) as well.”
The corporation added, “The safety of our passengers and the public is our top priority. With the heavy rains expected, we believe that extending the offer is the best course of action to ensure everyone’s safety. We urge passengers and the public to stay safe and avoid venturing out during the heavy rains.”
Heavy rains caused by cyclone Michaung have affected the operation of Chennai Metro.
Currently, several areas in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are facing heavy winds and rainfall from cyclone Michaung. As per the prediction by the India Meteorological Department, cyclone Michaung is expected to pass by the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts on December 4. It can make landfall in Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machillipattinam on December 5.
