Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced the changes via a blog post. He explained that even though the company has been doing well, the world’s economy isn’t doing as great. Things have become more expensive, like getting money to grow the business. This has made Spotify think about how it spends its money and how many people it needs to do the work.
“This brings me to a decision that will mean a significant step change for our company. To align Spotify with our future goals and ensure we are right-sized for the challenges ahead, I have made the difficult decision to reduce our total headcount by approximately 17 per cent across the company. I recognize this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions. To be blunt, many smart, talented and hard-working people will be departing us,” Daniel said in a blog post.
The CEO said that they had to think hard about how to make the company work better for the future. And sadly, this means that some people who work at Spotify will have to leave their jobs.

For those leaving, Spotify wants to make sure they are taken care of. They will get a payment to help them after leaving, based on how long they worked there. People will also get paid for any holidays they haven’t taken yet. The company will still cover healthcare for a while, and they’ll also help people with immigration issues related to their job. Additionally, departing employees will have access to services to help them find new jobs.
Daniel explained that even though Spotify needs to be smarter about how they use resources. The company wants to be better at using what they have to make a big impact. They’ve realized that having more people didn’t always mean being more effective.
In June 2023, Spotify laid off 200 employees from its podcast unit, representing about 2% of its workforce.

The layoffs were part of a “strategic realignment” of the podcast division, which Spotify said was necessary to “streamline” operations and focus on its core business of music streaming. The company also said that the layoffs would help it to “invest in new initiatives and opportunities” in the podcasting space.
