‘Rohit Sharma Can Play Another World Cup if he Pushes His Fitness like Virat Kohli’: Muttiah Muralitharan

Murali Muralitharan pointed out Rohit’s performance in the recently concluded World Cup and said he can play another one if he works hard on his fitness.

Bowling great Muttiah Muralitharan feels that Rohit Sharma can play another ODI World Cup but only if he pushes his fitness like his teammate Virat Kohli. Rohit led the Indian team to the World Cup final this year but failed to get his hands on the ultimate trophy. Rohit, who is 36 years old, is very unlikely to play in the next World Cup and gave another shot to win the trophy which he has dreamed of lifting for a very long time.

Rohit was in full flow throughout the ODI World Cup and the brisk starts that India enjoyed were largely due to his pyrotechnics at the top of the order. Scoring at an incredible strike rate of 125, he amassed 597 runs in 11 matches.

Muralitharan pointed out Rohit’s performance in the recently concluded World Cup and said he can play another one if he works hard on his fitness.

“You look at his ODI World Cup performance. The starts he gave, the kind of strike rates he batted at. He never failed in the tournament. And he’s only 36, that’s young. He can play another World Cup if he pushes his fitness like Virat,” the Sri Lanka bowling legend told Jio Cinema.

Meanwhile, he also backed Rohit to play the T20I format and said his strikes in the ODI WC was good for T20 and he desires to play the next T20 World Cup in 2024 than he definitely can.

“Why are people taking such harsh calls that it is the right time to go and bring youngsters. Until they are fit and performing, let them play,” he says. “Rohit batted with a strike rate of 130 in ODIs, which is not bad for T20. He’s an experienced player. You just have to work harder on your fitness after 35. If the desire is there, he’ll play. I think he’ll definitely play another World Cup. It’s on his mind.”

Talking about the method to succeed as a spinner in T20s, the legendary Sri Lanka spinner referred to Ashwin’s theory.

“It’s Ashwin’s opinion,” he says. “If you ask me, T20 hasn’t changed that much. You have to be good enough to bowl one side and the other (spin both ways). That’s it. Other variations are bowling fast, slow or the variations you get from the pitch. You just have to be confident that you can do the job. If you are, the rest will happen,” he added.
