Google Pays 36% Of Search Revenue From Safari To Apple: Sundar Pichai

In an ongoing trial between Epic Games and Google, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the company shells out a hefty amount to Apple to become the default browser on their phones. He confirmed that the search giant pays Apple a whopping 36 per cent cut of the ad revenue it earns from the iPhone users’ Safari searches. If estimated this amount will scale up to billions of dollars. After being pressed by Epic’s lawyer to reveal the exact amount Google pays Apply annually, Sundar Pichai estimated it to be around Rs 100 crore.

This massive annual payout was accidentally revealed by the Google expert witness on November 13 during the company’s Washington DC antitrust trial. It was then confirmed by Sundar Pichai during the ongoing trial.

This is not the case with other mobile companies. It is believed that Google isn’t quite generous with its other partners such as Samsung. The company allegedly pays less than half the amount which Apple gets. Sundar Pichai didn’t admit to this proposition but he wasn’t positive and said that it was possible.

Sundar Pichai called the Google business transactions with its partners as apples and oranges. He said that some deals with Samsung involve career payments too. Later in the testimony, he maintained that they fiercely compete with their all-time rival Apply in the tech market. Last year, the company shelled out almost $49 billion to its partners like Apple and Samsung to remain the default option for the search engines in their phones.

The search giant, Google is facing legal battles at multiple fronts. It includes two separate antitrust suits from the Department of Justice (DOJ) which are related to the alleged anticompetitive practices. In the trial with Epic Games, the tech giant is accused of illegally maintaining a monopoly over the app distribution through its Google Play store. At the beginning of the year, DOJ targeted the advertising business of the company and filed a second lawsuit against them. It was the first under the Biden administration. Google’s total revenue in 2022 was around $279.8 billion, the majority of which came from advertising.
