Recently, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) launched a mobile app called BIS Care App to aid gold buyers. The primary objective of this app is to assist people in tracking various gold jewellery items across the country. In addition to gold, the BIS Care App can also be used for silver ornaments. The app is specifically designed for checking hallmarked gold and silver items. It offers instant updates to buyers regarding the authenticity of the jewellery, ensuring they don’t fall into any traps.
Hallmarking serves as a guarantee of gold purity. It involves placing a mark on every piece of jewellery, featuring the logo of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) along with purity information. Hallmarking also provides details about testing centres.

HUID or Hallmark Unique Identification Number, is an alphanumeric identifier comprising six characters, including both letters and figures, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs website. During the hallmarking process, each jewellery item is assigned a unique HUID number. This number is physically imprinted onto the jewellery through hand-stamping at the Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Since April 1, 2023, the sale of gold items or jewellery has been prohibited nationwide and the six-digit HUID is now mandatory for all gold goods.

a. Install the BIS Care app on your phone.
b. Open the app after it finishes downloading.
c. Provide your email address, phone number and name.
d. Verify your phone number and email by entering the OTP (One-Time Password).
After this, you can check the authenticity of the Product with the ISI mark by using ‘Verify Licence Details’. The BIS Care App is a valuable tool for consumers to ensure the authenticity and purity of the jewellery they purchase, especially during the festive season.
