Imagine having a personal assistant who is available for you at all times. Now imagine having the power to customise this personal assistant. This is exactly what Instagram‘s upcoming feature could offer, if reports are to be believed. And if this happens for real, the way we use social media could be changed forever.

Instagram is reportedly working on a feature that will let users create their own, personalized, AI chatbots. The feature is still in development and might never see the light of the day but it surely is exciting to know about.
Instagram to let users create their AI chatbots
According to a report by TechCrunch, the upcoming feature could allow users to personalize the chatbots’ gender, age, ethnicity, personality, and interests. The chatbots could then be used as companions, providing assistance, guidance, or even acting as sounding boards for ideas. After personalising the chatbot, users can name it, give it an avatar and talk to it through a chat window, the report says.
For example, a user could create a chatbot that is a fashion expert, and then ask it for advice on what to wear to an upcoming event. Or, a user could create a chatbot that is a life coach, and then ask it for help with setting goals or overcoming challenges.
It is to be noted that we still don’t know if this feature will actually be made live anytime soon, as Instagram hasn’t officially announced anything of the sort. With that being said, it is worth mentioning that some potential benefits of this feature could be increased engagement on the platform as well as reduced workload for human moderators.

Chatbots could help users to stay engaged with Instagram for longer periods of time. In addition to this, the AI chatbots could take over some of the tasks that are currently performed by human moderators, such as responding to user inquiries or filtering out spam and abusive content.
Meta’s recently-launched AI assistant
In September this year, Meta had introduced its AI assistant during its Connect launch event. Called Meta AI, the AI assistant was reported to be available on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook soon.
“Meta AI is a new assistant you can interact with like a person, available on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and coming soon to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and Quest 3. It’s powered by a custom model that leverages technology from Llama 2 and our latest large language model (LLM) research. In text-based chats, Meta AI has access to real-time information through our search partnership with Bing and offers a tool for image generation,” the company wrote on its blog at the time of introducing Meta AI.
In addition to MetaAI, the company also said that it has also introduced 28 other AI chatbots with different personalities as well as a background stories. That’s not all, these chatbots will also have profiles on social media.
