The Indian Railways, continually committed to enhancing its infrastructure and passenger experience, has been diligently introducing new initiatives and upgrading railway facilities. Notably, the Indian Railways is also gearing up for the introduction of high-speed bullet trains. The latest addition to this array of innovations is the introduction of Push-Pull trains.
As the largest rail network in Asia, Indian Railways caters to the transportation needs of over 10 million passengers daily, many of whom come from lower-income groups with limited financial resources. In a bid to enhance the travel experience for these passengers and make their journeys more convenient, Indian Railways is preparing to launch Push-Pull trains.
The upcoming train service is expected to operate between Patna and Mumbai, significantly benefiting individuals seeking job opportunities and a better life in major urban centres. But what exactly is a Push-Pull train? The Push-Pull train seeks to offer a travel experience akin to the Vande Bharat Express, a high-speed train, but in the non-air-conditioned (non-AC) segment.

Similar to a metro system, this innovative train design incorporates two engines, one located at the front and the other at the rear of the train. Both of these engines will collaborate to push and pull the train in a single direction, requiring only one engine for propulsion.
One of the key advantages of this design is the potential to increase the train’s speed compared to conventional models. Furthermore, it enhances the train’s capacity by allowing for the addition of more coaches. This expanded capacity will enable a greater number of passengers to travel simultaneously, alleviating the ticket availability issue significantly. Additionally, the Push-Pull trains will necessitate less powerful engines, thereby reducing operational costs for the Indian Railways. Despite having two engines, these trains will be operated by a single driver. Reports suggest that the train will consist of a total of 22 coaches, encompassing general and sleeper classes.

The Push-Pull Train promises improved interiors and top-notch amenities, much like the Vande Bharat Express. These trains will feature closed vestibules, fire alarm systems, talk-back systems, and other advanced facilities to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for passengers.
