US To Present New Resolution on Israel-Gaza Conflict in UN Security Council | What We Know

Washington DC: The United States will present a new resolution in the United Nations Security Council regarding the Israel-Gaza Conflict. This new resolution is expected to be voted on as early as Tuesday – October 24, 2023.

After vetoing the resolutions put forth by Russia and Brazil, the United States has finalized its draft resolution for the UNSC. In this, the US has pushed for condemnation of the Hamas attacks in Israel which killed 1,400 people and violence against civilians.

Along with this, the resolution will also push the United Nations to reaffirm Israel’s right to self defence.

As per the Associated Press, the draft “demands the immediate release of all hostages, urges respect for international laws on conducting war and protecting civilians, urges all countries to intensify efforts to prevent a spillover, and demands immediate humanitarian access to Gaza.”

As per Al Jazeera, the US resolution is expected to be four pages and 18 points long. The draft also mentioned that any movement of people should be “voluntary, safe and consistent” with international law.

The draft also calls for a humanitarian pause, which would allow aid to keep flowing into Gaza. Humanitarian pauses were something the US did not agree to in the previous resolutions passed by Russia and Brazil.

The Russian resolution was struck down after five countries voted in favour of the resolution, four voted against and six countries abstained from voting.

For the Brazilian resolution, 12 countries voted in favour of the draft and Russia and the United Kingdom abstained. The US vetoed the resolution.
