The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) continues to offer the facility to deposit or exchange these banknotes at its 19 designated Issue Offices across the country. The RBI, in its FAQs section concerning the Rs 2000 note exchange and deposit, reassures that this facility remains open “until further advice,” meaning there isn’t a specified closure date for this service as of now.
However, it’s not a straightforward drop-and-swap. The exchange or credit of these notes will be under the purview of pertinent RBI/Government regulations. A submission of valid identity documentation and other due diligence as determined by the RBI will be necessary. Individuals can exchange Rs 2000 banknotes up to a cumulative amount of Rs 20,000 at a time. And for those who can’t make it to an RBI Issue Office, sending the Rs 2000 notes via India Post to any of the 19 designated RBI Issue Offices for credit to their Indian bank accounts is an alternative.
Before heading out, confirming the address of the RBI Issue Office nearest to you is advisable. Below is a list of some of the 19 RBI regional office addresses in major Indian cities where the Rs 2000 notes can be exchanged or deposited:
