The viral video shows astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti begins by transferring coffee from a packet into a small container.
Exploring space offers an incredibly thrilling experience. However, life for astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) presents unique challenges. Even the most basic activities, such as savoring a cup of coffee, become complex in the microgravity environment. Astronauts rely on straws and specially designed drinking bags as liquids usually float in the air. Recently, the European Space Agency (ESA) shared a video on X (formerly Twitter), offering a glimpse into an astronaut’s process of preparing and relishing a cup of coffee aboard the ISS. In the video, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti begins by transferring coffee from a packet into a small container.

However, her attempt to take a sip is met with unexpected challenges as the liquid doesn’t act in the similar way as it does on Earth. She then switches to a specially crafted cup, smoothly pours the coffee into it, and enjoys it without any complications. The video provides on-screen text labeling this unique cup as a ‘space cup.’
The European Space Agency (ESA) shared the video on October 1. The caption read, “Our astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti demonstrates how she has her morning coffee in space!” This post coincided with the global celebration of International Coffee Day, highlighting the beloved beverage’s place even beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Another individual shared his experience by saying, “I can’t have coffee anymore. I was on the tower at SLC 42 IN 2012, and we had a new intern, who didn’t know that I can’t have caffeine. To make a long story short, I got on the radio, and started telling jokes. For 45 minutes. NASA protective services came and got me, and made me pee in a cup, because they thought I had something stronger than coffee.”
“Very cool demonstration,” read a comment.
The specially designed space cups:
NASA has designed these special cups for astronauts to enjoy their coffee in space. NASA says that these cups will help them understand and improve how liquids move in space. They use math to figure out how to make containers that work well for different tasks.
To use these space cups, all an astronaut has to do is touch their lips to the edge, and the liquid moves up to them, just like a straw works on Earth. Whether they want to sip it slowly or drink it quickly, it works somewhat like it does on Earth, making it easier for them to enjoy their drinks in space.
