As per a popular belief, lighting a diya in the South direction symbolises that we are revealing the way to our home to the God of Death. Hence, it is best to avoid lighting up a diya in the South direction. However, it is still considered auspicious to light a diya for Yamraj to avoid untimely death.
If you have lit a lamp for Yamraj, then you can consider placing it in front of the pooja room or at any intersection. You can also place the diya under the Peepal tree. Apart from this, you can illuminate the dark nooks and corners of your house with fairy lights, lamps or diyas.
