It was Shubman Gill’s sixth ODI century as he became the quickest Indian to do so – 35 innings.
Shubman Gill continued his sublime form with the bat and smashed a brilliant century against Australia in the second ODI at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore. The talented opener showcased his class and scored his 6th ODI ton which he missed in the first ODI. The 23-year-old played with positive intent and scored boundaries at will to put the Australian bowlers on the back foot.

Shubman completed his century in 92 balls and celebrated it with his trademark gesture of bowing down in front of fans in the stadium. He was dismissed of 104 as his knock was laced with 6 fours and 4 sixes.
It was Gill’s sixth ODI century as he became the quickest Indian to do so – 35 innings. He broke the 9-year-old record of veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan who took 46 innings to hit his 6th ODI ton. Dhawan achieved the feat in 2014 against Sri Lanka in Cuttack.

Shubman has been in tremendous form this year and has scored five ODI centuries thus far. He became the seventh Indian to score five or more ODI centuries in a calendar year. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar are the only batters to achieve the feat in more than one calendar year.

Looking at his current form, Gill will have the opportunity to score a few more in the coming months during the ODI World Cup.
Meanwhile, Gill shared a 200-run stand for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer who also scored a fine century. The duo had a great communication in the middle which was missed in the first ODI and resulted into Iyer’s run out. They complemented each other well and ran well between the wickets to put Australia under pressure.
Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad departed early for just 4. Josh Hazlewood was impressive in his line and length and that got him the wicket of Gaikwad, taking the outside edge off the right-hander’s bat to be caught behind by Alex Carey.
Gill and Iyer didn’t feel any pressure and counter-attacked the Australian bowlers right from the start.
