India’s six-run defeat to Bangladesh in the 2023 Asia Cup on Friday (September 15) was not short of its positives, as star opener Shubman Gill added to his growing reputation with an incredible century, which was the fifth ODI tonne of his career.
Through the course of his incredible knock, which almost single-handedly kept the Men in Blue alive in the game as wickets kept falling around him, Gill achieved a massive world record. Gill now has more runs than any batter in the history of ODI cricket after 32 innings in the format.

The 24-year-old broke Hashim Amla’s long-standing record. The legendary South African batter had a total of 1650 runs after 32 innings, a mark Gill was able to surpass after playing a knock of 121 in 133 balls. Coming into the game, Gill had a total of 1590 runs in 31 innings and missed Amla’s record of the most runs after 30 and 31 innings, respectively.

Gill has a phenomenal record in ODI cricket with a tally of 1712 runs and an astonishing average of 63.41, with five tons and eight half-centuries to his name.
Talking about the match, India suffered a narrow defeat in their last super four stage match of the tournament. Bangladesh beat India for the first time in 11 years in the Asia Cup with their last win over the Men in Blue in the continental showpiece event coming in 2012.
Gill completed 1,000 runs in ODI cricket this year, showing his red-hot form going into the 2023 World Cup. He is also the second-quickest Indian to score five ODI centuries, behind Shikhar Dhawna. Dhawan had completed the feat in just 28 matches.
This was Gill’s third 50+ score of the tournament, having made half-centuries against Nepal and Pakistan.
India had rested Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj for this game, having already qualified for the final.
