Apple Watch Series 9 is finally official with a slew of new upgrades, including a new S9 chipset that enables multiple new features, including a new double-tap gesture. Here’s all you need to know.
Apple Watch Series 9 is finally official and has been revealed with a slew of upgrades in comparison to the Apple Watch Series 8—including the new S9 chip with 60% more transistors than the Apple Watch Series 8. It also comes with the second-generation ultra-wideband chip that enables users to better communicate with nearby Apple devices for improved range and functionality.

Apple Watch Series 9 Features and Specifications
Apple Watch Series 9 runs on the Apple S9 chip—enabling the watch to support several new features, such as fast charge support, on-device Siri, and a new gesture-based feature called ‘double tap.’ The new feature is powered by the 4-core Neural Engine in the S9 processor, which detects your wrist’s motion to enable the double tap.
“Users can tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform many of the most common actions on Apple Watch Series 9,” Apple said.
The Apple Watch Series 9 also gets a new display that can reach 2000 nits of peak brightness—double that of the Apple Watch Series 8—with a minimum brightness of just 1 nit.
Regarding battery life, Apple claims that the “power efficiency of the S9 SiP allows Apple Watch Series 9 to maintain an all-day 18-hour battery life.”
Apple Watch Series 9 runs on watchOS 10 out of the box, bringing several new features like the new Smart Stack, new Compass Waypoints and Maps capabilities, and the ability to measure time spent in daylight using the ambient light sensor to help reduce the risk of myopia.

Another significant change with the Apple Watch Series 9 and across the complete lineup is the omission of leather for cases and watch bands. Instead, the iPhone maker has introduced a new material called ‘FineWoven’ as part of its commitment to becoming Carbon Neutral as a company.
Apple Watch Series 9 Price
Apple Watch Series 9 is now available for pre-order starting today, with availability on September 22. It starts at a price of $399 for the GPS versions and $499 for the GPS+Cellular variant.
