Redditor enjoying Balushahi and Peda with tea in viral post has Chai lovers leaving the comment section.
Making judgments seems to be a common trait among Desis, and it occurs frequently and in various situations. While these judgments are often controversial, one particularly interesting aspect of their judgmental tendencies is their obsession with assessing the taste of their beloved chai based on its colour. Before taking a sip, they carefully observe the hue of the tea and make assumptions about its flavour. It’s almost as if their sixth sense kicks in at that moment. And when the colour of their ‘Kadak Chai’ doesn’t meet their expectations, Desis can’t help but criticise it relentlessly. After all, they don’t like to tamper with this beverage that flows through the minds and hearts of every Indian.
So, when a Redditor shared a photo of enjoying sweets with tea, Desis couldn’t resist expressing their disapproval at the Chai’s light colour.
In a Reddit post under the IndianFoodPhotos subreddit, a user named VideoBeast666 shared a picture with the caption, “American Bro enjoying some Tea & sweets in India (balushahi & peda with homemade tea).”
Well, it remains a bit unclear whether the term “American Bro” refers to the poster himself or his American friend. Nevertheless, alongside this post was a picture depicting a steel box filled with Balushahi (an Indian sweet resembling a glazed doughnut but with distinct texture and taste) and Peda (thick, semi-soft round Indian sweets) accompanied by a cup of tea.

One user couldn’t resist commenting, “That’s just milk,” while another boldly declared, “That is the ugliest looking tea I’ve ever seen. Bro’s drinking straight up milk and saying it’s tea.” However, the photo also provoked discussions about the unusual combination of consuming sweets with chai. A user chimed in, “That’s not how it works, you have tea with something crunchy/salty/Savory, NOT SWEET, coz tea is already sweet, maybe try rusks, khaari (puff pastry), jeera butter, or simple Monaco biscuits.”

Nonetheless, the original poster felt compelled to defend the criticised comments and eventually resorted to clarifying matters in another Reddit post. They wrote, “My response to those who insulted my tea, I HAVE PROOF THE FLASH WAS THE REASON IT LOOKED LIGHTER, SEE HERE, A PICTURE WITHOUT FLASH (SAME sweets & tea). I’m a chef, I know very well how to make tea! I’m also a photographer, so I’m telling you it was the flash!!”
Expanding on the combination of sweets and tea, the Redditor explained, “Second off, barfi and tea and mithai with Tea is how it is always served in the Doaba Punjab Himalayan Himachal Regions. That’s how we serve ours, as many of you know each state has their own methods for making food.”
The Reddit post eventually gained viral attention, accumulating over 300 upvotes.
