Portable gaming certainly has its benefits. After all, there is no better feeling for a gamer than playing his/her favourite games from anywhere. And more and more brands seem to be noticing this. Back in 2004, when the PSP (PlayStation Portable) was launched in Japan, the world had its eyes on it. And the PSP quickly became a roaring trend. Since then, Sony hasn’t really announced a dedicated PlayStation portable device but that’s going to change pretty soon.

In May this year, we all got quite excited when Sony gave us a sneak-peek of its handheld gaming device, named Project Q back then. Well the much-awaited Project Q now has a name, and a tentative launch timeline as well as price.
Sony’s PlayStation Portal to launch this year
Project Q is officially called the PlayStation Portal and will launch later this year. The news has been announced by the Japanese tech giant via a blog post. Even though the exact date of launch hasn’t been confirmed by Sony yet, it surely is exciting to know that we could get our hands on the device as soon as this year. The device will launch at a price of USD 199.99, EURO 219.99 GBP 199.99 and YEN 29,980. The India price, however, it yet to be announced.
The PlayStation Portal will connect to your PS5 via WiFi and can run all games installed on your console. It come with a 8-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution and 60FPS. At the side are controllers identical to the PS5’s DualSense controllers. These controllers will also have haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi*, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal,” Sony’s blog post reads.
The device won’t have bluetooth and will connect with recently-announced Sony’s Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset. There is also a 3.5mm jack that will let you connect your own earphones to the device.
“Both Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore deliver low latency lossless audio from PS5 and PlayStation Portal using our new PlayStation Link wireless technology,” Sony said in its blog.
When Sony announced Project Q
In May this year, Sony had codenamed what we now know as the PlayStation Portal as Project Q.

“SIE also announced Project Q, a dedicated device launching later this year that enables you to play any compatible1 game installed on your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi2. With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV. All of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, are featured on the device,” the company had said in a press release back then.
