Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has issued a new advisory to employees regarding their office presence. He emphasized that employees failing to meet the forthcoming three-day-per-week mandate could face the risk of job termination.
In an email sent by Lori Goler, who holds the position of “head of people” at Meta, employees were reminded that… “beginning September 5, people assigned to an office will need to spend at least three days per week in person to foster healthy relationships and strong collaboration,” reported the New York Post.

As stated in the memorandum obtained by the Insider website, Ms. Goler mentioned that…“Managers will review badge and Status Tool information every month and follow up with those who didn’t meet the requirement, subject to local law and works council requirements,”
“As with other company policies, repeated violations may result in disciplinary action, up to and including a Performance@ rating drop and, ultimately, termination if not addressed,” the memo added.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is currently undergoing a “year of efficiency” as per the directive of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who aims to reduce costs and streamline the company’s operations.

As part of these cost-cutting measures, approximately 21,000 employees, accounting for about a quarter of the total workforce at Facebook and Instagram, have been laid off.
A recent directive regarding office attendance pertains specifically to Meta employees assigned to physical office locations. Conversely, remote workers have been advised to limit their office visits to no more than four days every two months unless there is a compelling business reason.
A spokesperson for Meta emphasized the company’s belief in the continued importance of distributed work, particularly as technology advances.
The company’s current focus is on enhancing the in-person experience for those who work from the office while also making strategic investments in remote work.
Following a challenging 2022, Meta’s stock has increased by over 120% since January due to improved financial results and investor optimism surrounding the company’s cost-saving initiatives.

In June, Meta introduced a requirement for most employees to work from the office at least three days per week. Importantly, remote employees were confirmed to be exempt from this requirement.
Earlier in March, CEO Mark Zuckerberg encouraged employees to spend more time working on-site, citing performance data that suggested better outcomes for those who transitioned from in-person to remote work or remained in-person.
Meta is not the only major tech company implementing a return-to-office strategy. Amazon recently sparked controversy among its workforce by emailing employees that some were not meeting the expectation of working in an assigned office for a minimum of three days per week.
