Jan Leike, who is serving as the Head of Superalignment at OpenAI, revealed in a discussion on a recent episode of “The 80,000 Hours Podcast,” that several research-oriented positions are currently available. Leike affirmed that the company is looking to hire a number of research engineers, research scientists, and research managers.
It’ll probably be at least 10 before the end of the year, is my guess. And then maybe even more in the years after that,” he said.
Talking about strong candidate skills, Leike asserted that a person planning to apply should have a good grasp of coding, knowledge of machine learning, and a demonstrated aptitude for critical thinking. However, these qualities, impressive as they are, are only part of the equation. Leike further said that there is also a requirement for a genuine commitment to advancing the safety of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Within OpenAI’s superalignment team, research engineers will be held responsible for designing and executing intricate experiments for safety research. Interestingly, this job role will give a massive annual salary, ranging from $245,000 (roughly Rs 2 crore) to $450,000 (around Rs 3.7 crore). There are some additional compensation benefits as well, which people can check on OpenAI’s careers page. The salaries for other roles that we have mentioned above are not known, but should be high.
The responsibilities of a research engineer would be crafting code for machine learning training, proficient management of experimental datasets, and fixing troubleshooting issues as they arise.
Furthermore, Leike asserted that a background in AI safety or a PhD in machine learning is not required for these roles, challenging the traditional norms of entry. Instead, Leike emphasized the team’s interest in candidates who has the ability to effectively develop machine learning models.
For both research engineers and scientists, Leike highlighted that the requirement is “a lot of critical thinking, and asking important questions, and being very curious about the world and the technology that we’re building.”
