The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns for Financial Year 2022-23 expires on July 31, 2023. With just two more days left to file this year’s IT Returns, taxpayers are in a hurry to file their returns. As of now, the government has decided not to extend this deadline of ITR filing and filing IT Returns later than July 31, will be considered as belated ITR filing and will draw a penalty.
According to a tweet by the Income Tax department, till July 27, 5.03 crore IT Returns have been filed, out of which, 88 per cent ITRs have been e-verified and out of the e-verified ITRs, more than 2.69 core ITRs have already been processed.

However, many taxpayers are requesting for an extension in the ITR filing deadline due to floods in certain areas, which resulted in disruption in the lives of people, according to a report by The Economic Times.
Several areas in the country, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Assam have witnessed severe landslides and floods with Yamuna bank floods forcing people to evacuate homes even in Delhi NCR. Even Telangana, Gujarat and Maharashtra too witnessed floods. Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat have a big tax filing population.

According to a press release by LocalCircles, a Delhi-based market research firm, among 12,000 Indians surveyed from 315 districts of the country, 5 per cent tried filing ITR but were facing difficulties while 8 per cent was waiting for the last week to file ITR. 9 per cent on the other hand, said it was impossible to file ITR by July 31, reported The Economic Times.
LocalCircles in a survey note said that feedback in community discussions indicate most people want just a 2-week extension to be able to file their returns as the flood and power outage situation on the ground normalises.

On the other hand, several taxpayers also complained that the e-filing portal of the Income Tax department was not working properly and took to twitter to complain about the the issue.
