NEW DELHI: On a day when the opposition’s no-confidence motion against the government was admitted, a confident PM Narendra Modi asserted that he was “guaranteeing” that the pace of development would accelerate during his “third term in office” and India would be among the top three economies.
“The results of the work done this term and the last term of our government are visible to the country. There is full faith that India’s development journey won’t stop. At the start of our first term, India was the 10th largest economy in the world. We were ‘dus numbari’ when you handed over the responsibility to me. During our second term, India is now the world’s fifth largest economy. Based on our track record, I am saying that in our third term in government, we will be among the three largest economies in the world… This is Modi’s guarantee (‘Modi ki guarantee’). Let me also assure you that post-2024, our development journey will be even faster. During my third term, you will see your dreams come true,” the PM said while inaugurating Bharat Mandapam, the new exhibition-cum-conference, in the revamped Pragati Maidan.
The PM began by remembering martyrs of the Kargil war on Vijay Diwas and seemed to suggest he was not distracted by the no-trust vote while appearing confident about his party’s poll prospects in next year’s general elections. Modi, who has been facing demands from the opposition for a statement on the Manipur crisis, used the platform to list a series of steps taken to build infrastructure projects, while also hitting out at his detractors.

‘Some tried to stall Pragati Maidan revamp’
While inaugurating Bharat Mandapam, the new exhibition-cum-conference in the revamped Pragati Maidan complex, PM Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that facilities such as these should have been built decades ago as they help change the profile of the country.
“There is no shortage of people with negative thoughts. They sought to stop this effort, and even went to court… Some people have this habit of seeking to stall good initiatives. A lot of stories also came when Kartavya Path was being built. When it was ready, even these people acknowledged that something good had happened. I am sure, in some time, even with Bharat Mandapam, this gang will accept (that it’s good), and may even come here for a lecture,” he said.
The PM said the new convention centre was part of the government’s holistic approach towards making India a global conference venue and pointed to e-conference visas being issued to people from across the world. He said passenger handling capacity at Delhi airport had been ramped up and Jewar airport would add to it. “With the expansion of the hospitality industry in the NCR, we have planned an entire ecosystem,” he added.
The major thrust of the speech to a packed house comprising businessmen, diplomats, ministers and schoolchildren was on the government’s focus on infrastructure projects as Modi compared the pace of construction during the last nine years with the pre-2014 period.
“India is moving ahead while addressing long-standing challenges. Instead of temporary solutions, we are putting emphasis on permanent solutions,” he said, adding that the government had spent Rs 34 lakh crore on building infrastructure in the last nine years. Modi said ahuge opportunity awaited India and the government’s policies were bearing fruit. He pointed to the recent Niti Aayog report on the multidimensional poverty index, which estimated that 13.5 crore people had moved out of poverty during the last six years.
“India can be a developed nation, it can remove poverty… Other reports are also saying that extreme poverty is ending. Steps taken in the last nine years, the policies are taking the country in the right direction. Progress can only take place when your intent is clear, policies are right for positive changes.”
