MUMBAI: The scorching domestic airfares of May and early June have made way for cheaper fares, what with the southwest monsoon winds sweeping across the Indian heartland, heralding the start of the lean air travel season. Though India’s daily domestic passenger traffic hasn’t dropped drastically and is still over 4 lakh, a change in the demand-supply equation is apparent as domestic fares have cooled considerably.

The most notorious of them all, the 24-hour advance purchase airfare to fly from Delhi to Mumbai, has also taken a mighty fall. In the last week of May and early June, the cheapest fare from Delhi to Mumbai for travel the next day began around Rs 19,000 for a oneway, non-stop flight. The Delhi-Dubai fare was cheaper at Rs 14,000. After the ministry of civil aviation intervened, fare on that route dropped to Rs 18,000 and a week later to Rs 14,000.

On Thursday, the cheapest Delhi-Mumbai ticket was priced at Rs 4,500 for travel the next day. Last-minute fares are down on other routes too. For instance, after a long time, a 24-hour advance purchase ticket from Mumbai to Kochi one-way on a non-stop flight is priced at Rs 4,000. Last month, the cheapest tickets on this route began at Rs 20,000.

After Go First suspended flights in early May—the airline was cleared to operate 1,538 flights a week—airfares on certain domestic routes began climbing till they reached unprecedented levels in the last week of May and early June.
Airfares on flights to Leh and Srinagar climbed the most as Go First was a popular choice for tourists flying to these destinations. The cheapest Delhi-Leh oneway ticket on a non-stop flight is currently Rs 15,000. Last month, it was around Rs 23,000. Last-minute fares to destinations such as Ranchi remain high though.
