Date to validate Aadhaar of govt schoolchildren extended to June 15

The Maharashtra school education department has extended the deadline to validate Aadhaar details of students in government schools across the state to June 15. The deadline fixed earlier was May 15.

When schools reopen after summer break, the process of Sancha-Manyata (fixing the students-teacher ratio) will begin to fix the number of students based on their Aadhaar details.

The decision was taken in a meeting held in Pune last week under the chairmanship of Maharashtra School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar.

At the end of the earlier deadline of May 15, Aadhaar details of around 3.8 lakh out of the two crore students in Maharashtra government schools were not uploaded on the SARAL portal of the education department.

According to schools, however, there are practical challenges in completing the task.

A ZP school principal from Pune, said, “There are some students whose data is mismatching… such as the the name on the card and school register. There are some cases where parents do not have the required documents to complete the registration or do not use the old phone number to make any corrections.”

Spokesperson of the Maharashtra School Principals Association, Mahendra Ganpule, said, “There are ways to do physical verification for students whose Aadhaar validation has failed. Education officials can visit schools and verify such students based on attendance, exam performance or by interacting with their parents. No student should go uncounted because of failure in Aadhaar validation as that could reduce the number of teachers in that school.”

Even after severe opposition to the drive, a Government Resolution (GR) issued in January made Aadhaar a mandatory document during school admissions.

Other decisions taken in the last week’s meeting include, curriculum preparation for agriculture, which will be a mandatory subjects at school level, formation of a committee for creating cluster of schools with small schools, bridge course for former defence personnel who will be allowed to work as sports teachers in government schools and creating awareness on effective use of new set of textbooks having blank pages after every chapter.
