Every year on May 1, Maharashtra Day is observed. In addition to International Labour Day, May 1 is celebrated as the foundation day of the state of Maharashtra. It is celebrated with lots of zeal and enthusiasm. This day commemorates the beginning of Maharashtra’s illustrious heritage.
On this day, in 1960, two new states were formed: Maharashtra and Gujarat. Both states had a disagreement about the city of Bombay. The Marathi people believed that Bombay should join them because the majority of the people there spoke Marathi.
MAHARASHTRA DAY 2023:HISTORY
A brand-new state, Bombay, was established on November 1, 1956, with the implementation of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, which included the Marathi-speaking districts.
The bilingual state of Bombay was separated into two independent states, Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people, by the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960, with Gujarat becoming the 15th state of the Indian Union.
MAHARASHTRA DAY 2023:SIGNIFICANCE
Maharashtra Day commemorates the founding of the state of Maharashtra as well as the battle for a separate state. The day is a public holiday across the state with a massive celebration occurring with parades, cultural programmes, and flag-hoisting rituals.
It also allows individuals to exhibit their pride in being a Maharashtrian and to commemorate the state’s rich cultural history.

MAHARASHTRA DAY 2023:CELEBRATION
Maharashtra Day is often referred to as Maharashtra Diwas or Maharashtra Din. The day marks a huge procession at Shivaji Park, Dadar. Various cultural events are held throughout the state of Maharashtra.
Both states celebrate this day with pride, from speeches to colourful parades. Many new initiatives are launched by the state government and the business sector.
