New Delhi: The Gujarat High Court will today hear Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s appeal against the court order convicting him in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark. Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday moved the high court against the Surat sessions court’s order that refused to stay his conviction in the case.

1. Gujarat High Court judge, Justice Geeta Gopi, has rescued herself from hearing the appeal of the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
2. Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer PS Champaneri mentioned the case before the court, seeking an urgent hearing. But after a brief hearing, the court said, “Not before me.”
3. Justice Gopi directed the court registry to hand the case over to Chief Justice AJ Desai or assign it to a different bench.

6. A sessions court in Gujarat’s Surat dismissed his plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the criminal defamation case.
7. A Surat court in Gujarat on March 23 convicted Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case and sentenced him to two years in jail. The court granted bail to Gandhi and allowed him to appeal to a higher court in a month.
8. Following his conviction, he was disqualification as a Lok Sabha member from the date of the verdict.
9. Rahul Gandhi on April 3 filed an appeal in the sessions court against his conviction and said that the order was “erroneous and patently perverse” and that he was sentenced in a manner so as to attract disqualification as a MP.

10. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Purnesh Modi Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi over his remarks, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”. He made the comment during an election rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
