A Pune-based IT professional lost over Rs 12.85 lakh in online scam

Cyber frauds are rising at a rapid pace as we are witnessing new cases on daily basis. It was recently reported that a Mumbai-based teacher lost Rs 80,000 in a Provident Fund scam and a 53-year-old woman also lost Rs 87,000 while trying to order food online. Now, it has been discovered that a Pune-based IT professional lost Rs 12.85 lakh while trying to generate extra income through different methods.

Amrutkar, who works remotely for a Bangalore-based IT company, was approached by a cyber fraudster who was offering him an opportunity to earn money from home. The scammer told the victim that he could earn big by just posting positive comments on Google review, according to details shared by HT.

The victim was just asked to click on a message to post reviews, after which he started earning Rs 150 for each positive review. Later when the fraudster gained the trust of the victim, he made a call to him posing as a representative of some company. On the call, the scammer asked him to participate in a paid task to earn more money, but there was also a condition. The victim was required to pay a certain amount for each task.

The cited source reported that Amrutkar was promised that he would be refunded the money once he completes the task. But, he somehow got tricked because of the scheme of earning easy money and the fraudster managed to transfer Rs 12.85 lakh in five different transactions in his bank account. Once Amrutkar lost all the money, he realized that the task and task providers were both fraudulent. He then lodged a complaint with the local police station, after the scammer refused to return his money.

People are advised to not after or trust everything that they see online. For all things such as Provident Fund, and Aadhar Card, visit the official government website to get your work done. If you want to order food online or anything else, make sure you are using a trusted or known source to avoid losing your hard-earned money. Do not trust the job opportunities that you get on WhatsApp or emails or Telegram. It is better to not entertain unknown users on calls if they try to sell something or offer a job opportunity or talk about something that makes you suspicious and is not genuine.
