5 WhatsApp features coming in 2023: Edit message, duration for disappearing messages and more

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently unveiled a slew of new updates and features for WhatsApp, including a new desktop app for Windows and new group features and controls for Android and iOS. But that’s not all – WhatsApp is also gearing up to introduce various new features in 2023. While some of these features have already been introduced, others are currently under beta testing or in development.

According to WAbetainfo, a website that tracks all the latest developments around WhatsApp, the instant messaging platform is developing a host of new features to make messaging more fun, and interactive, and enhance its user interface. These features include an edit message option, video once audio, and more. While these features have not yet been officially announced by WhatsApp, the report suggests that they are currently under development and will be released for beta testing before being rolled out to everyone in future updates of the app.

Let’s take a look at all the upcoming WhatsApp features that we might see soon on Meta-owned WhatsApp.

Edit message

WhatsApp will soon allow its users to edit their messages after sending them. Using the edit message feature, users will be able to quickly and easily correct mistakes in their messages without sending additional messages or deleting the wrong messages.

However, the platform will provide a 15-second window to edit sent messages. Additionally, edited messages will be marked with an “edited” label within the message bubble which will be visible to both the sender and receiver.  The edit message feature is currently under development but is expected to release soon in the future updates of the app.

15 additional durations for disappearing messages

WhatsApp is also planning to update the disappearing messages section. With the new update the platform is said to add 15 new durations to set for the disappearing message option. Currently, WhatsApp allows its users to send disappearing messages that disappear from the chat of both sender and receiver automatically. Users can set the durations for disappearing messages from three options: 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days.

However, WhatsApp will soon add 15 new time duration options for disappearing messages under the “More options” menu. The new update will allow users to set up a timer for disappearing messages from 1 year, 180 days, 60 days, 30 days, 21 days, 14 days, 6 days, 5 days, 4 days, 3 days, 2 days, 12 hours, 6 hours, 3 hours, and 1 hour.

Pinning messages within chats and groups

WhatsApp is also working on a new feature: the ability to pin messages which will give users the ability to pin messages within a chat window. Users will be able to pin the messages in personal or group chat for faster accessibility by selecting on the ‘ Pin’ option available in the chat window.

Once the message is pinned, a small icon will appear on the chat bubble indicating that the message is pinned, and the message will be shown at the top of the conversation for quick access.

View once audio

The Meta-owned platform is also working on a new feature which will allow users to send audio messages that are only playable once. Just like view once photos or videos, now users will be able to send ‘listen once audio’ in the chat windows.

With this feature, the platform is enhancing the privacy of users and reducing the risk of audio being played again and again with someone else.  The feature will protect sensitive and confidential information.

Audio chats

Just like discord, WhatsApp is now planning to allow users to join audio chats and stay connected. While the platform already allows users to initiate group video and audio calls, the new audio chats will further make the messaging experience more interactive and fun.

According to the WAbetainfo report, WhatsApp will add new waveforms in the chat header which will allow users to start audio chats. While not much has been disclosed about this feature, WhatsApp is expected to release the audio chat option in future updates.
