Kalashtami 2023: Dates, Timings, Rituals and Significance

Kala Ashtami is obsereved every month during Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha or in other words this auspisious day falls on the 8th day of the waning phase of moon. Kalashtami is a hindu festival which is dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairava who is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Kalashtami will fall on the 14th for this month (March).

Significance

The most significant Kalashtami, also known as Kalabhairav Jayanti, falls in the month of Margashirsha. It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in form of Bhairav on this day. This auspicious day is celebrated all across the country with utmost devotion by the devotees of Lord Bhairav.

As believed by the Hindu legends, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva once had an argument in which a remark made by Brahma made Shiva furious. Shiva took the form of Mahakaleshwar and chopped the fifth head of Brahma. Since then this form of Lord Shiva has been worshiped as ‘Kaal Bhairav’. This story is also recited by the devotees observing a fast on Kalashtami as Kala Ashtami vrat katha. It is also believed that by worshiping Lord Kaal Bhairav on the day of Kala Ashtami can remove all the pain, sufferings, pain and negativity from life of a person.
